This article describes the regulations from Part 15 of the FCC Code. Note that this information is specific to the 2.4-2.4835 GHz band. While Part 15 covers more than just that band, this article does not. Note some requirements may be different in other bands.

Frequency Hopping

  1. Minimum Channel Carrier Separation = 25kHz or (2/3) of the 20dB bandwidth of the hopping channel (whichever is greater, provided output power of < 125mW, if >125mW then remove the 2/3)
  2. Systems should use a minimum of 15 channels
  3. Each channel should (on average) be used equally (systems may avoid transmitting on a particular frequency as long as 15 channels or more are used)
  4. Average time of occupancy on any channel <= 0.4 seconds
  5. Minimum 6dB bandwidth = 500 kHz
  6. Maximum Power = 1 W (if you have >= 75 non-overlapping hopping channels) or = 0.125 W (otherwise)
  7. Directional gain antennas > 6dBi must reduce transmit power (1dB power reduction for every 3 dB of gain above 6dB)
  8. In any 100kHz bandwidth outside the operating band, the power should be 20dB below the highest level of transmit power
