Network Services
Network services like email, network file storage, remote backup, software install, etc. are obviously critically important for our day-to-day activities. Therefore, it is beneficial for us to know what services are available and perhaps most importantly, with whom we should speak when we have issues.
At the University of Michigan, several different organizations provide network services. This can be pretty frustrating and confusing at times, but there is some reason for it. Nonetheless, here's how things are setup today.
With the widespread use of computing today, the University of Michigan provides many services to the entire student body. These services are run by ITCS (Information Technology Central Services). Historically, however, many computing services were only needed by engineers and scientists for research. As a result, the College of Engineering provided those services through CAEN (Computer Aided Engineering Network). Many of the services formally offered only by CAEN, however, are now being offered by ITCS because computing has become such a pervasive need for all students and all departments. Finally, DCO (Departmental Computing Office) within EECS provides services specifically for computers on their network.
