Old ctools wiki
Wireless Group Resources
Because so many of our daily challenges relate to our ability to access and utilize the tools available to us, creating one location to share these challenges, and hopefully resolutions to them, seemed to be a useful endeavor. To accomplish that goal, this ctools site, and more specifically this wiki, was setup to enable group members to share that information and those resources more easily.
Getting Started
Resolving Computer-Related Issues
You can try to talk to other people in the group, but a quick email to help@eecs.umich.edu may end up being easier. DCO has the access to the software installed on many of the machines.
Network Printing/Setting up a Network Printer
Network Storage/Mapping a Network Drive
For a variety of reasons, it can be helpful to have access to your work beyond the local machine you're currently logged into. There are two primary solutions: external media or network storage. External media like CDs, DVDs, and USB thumb drives allow you to keep your data with you--whether or not you have access to a network connection. Network storage, on the other hand, offers virtually unlimited storage and can be setup to automatically backup your work.
Network Storage Options
- IFS/AFS Space
- NAS Space
- Group Workstations (oakland, cass, etc)
IFS/AFS Space
Space on the institutional file system (IFS) is made available to everyone at the University through ITCS. It's a system used at many universities and research labs around the world, and ITCS currently (as of 08/28/08) offers users 10GB of centralized network storage. ITCS offers a good overview of IFS here
- Folder Path to umich Root: \\afs\umich.edu
- Folder Path to Personal Space: \\afs\umich.edu\user\u\n\uniqname
- Example: \\afs\umich.edu\user\j\k\jkbrown
where 'uniqname' is your University of Michigan uniqname, and 'u' & 'n' are the 1st & 2nd characters of your uniqname
These resources can also be accessed online through the web-based interface at http://mfile.umich.edu/.
At one point in time, CAEN offered separate storage for College of Engineering students, faculty, and staff; however, CAEN has been slowly getting rid of the service, but there's a chance that you can still access this space if you've been around the University for a few years.
Network-Attached Storage Space
A network-attached storage (NAS) space is administered by CAEN. CAEN currently (as of 08/28/08) provides students with 5GB of storage for free (1GB for faculty and staff). The storage allotment has been growing pretty consistently over the years that CAEN has been providing this networked storage solution. CAEN has a great resource that outlines how to connect to the NAS space from a variety of places, which you can read about if you go here.

Connecting to Remote Computers
install PuTTY install; change SSH X11 forwarding
via VNC, login through PuTTY; Linux cmds to start VNC; run RealVNC; if desired, setup a network drive here as well (like afs); gettokens; full screen w/ F8; kill VNC; exit PuTTY
Note: an advantage of this soln - if network connection lost, all processes continue running; allows one to leave their work running even if they leave their local machine
+ auto scripts to start VNC
via xming, launch xming; login through PuTTY; launch programs as normal
Note: a disadvantage of this soln - if network connection lost, all processes running are terminated
Setting Up Access to the Cadence ST65 Process

Setting Up Access to the Cadence ST45 Process
Dennis Sylvester's group maintains a good resource on ctools aptly called "ST45 Resources" that discusses much more than the basic setup discussed here. It may be worthwhile to gain access to that ctools group to remain up-to-date and to find answers to more advanced issues.
The directions for the ST45 process were adapted from their group to apply to ours where necessary. Furthermore, many of these directions also apply to the ST65 process.
